Overcoming Dyslexia - Start With a Home Dyslexia Test

Dyslexia is a neurological condition that keeps the signals sent by the eyes from being clearly interpreted by the brain. As a result, dyslexics (people with dyslexia) see things differently. Dyslexics require special training to be able to interpret what they see in ways that let them extract the necessary info to be able to interpret them correctly.

Often the first indication of dyslexia shows up as problems with reading. In reading you need to see the letters correctly and then interpret these letters into words and the words into sounds things or actions. Different types of dyslexia make this process of seeing and interpreting difficult.

The origin of the term “dyslexia” is found in the idea of “problems with reading”. The word is made up of “dys” as in not functioning and “lexia” from pertaining to dictionaries, reading, word orders.

About 10% of the general population has some sort of dyslexia, in some degree.

There are symptoms of dyslexia that one can look for, such as difficulty with reading for understanding, or with reading aloud. But there is really only one way to know for sure whether a person has dyslexia or not and to what degree.

That is by way of professional testing for dyslexia.

In the last year, in a new development, an excellent accredited dyslexia test has become available online.

You can now get a full dyslexia assessment made over the Internet by taking a full adult dyslexia test at home, online.

It takes about half an hour and costs less than a dinner for two in a medium-good restaurant.

Do you ever have trouble reading? Are you dyslexic? Ever take a test for dyslexia? Do you know someone who might be dyslexic? A simple test could change their lives for the better!

How To Starting a Scrapbooking Business

Scrapbooking is not as simple as some people make it out to be, especially if you plan on taking it seriously. When you start a scrapbooking business, keep in mind that the money will not come rolling in right from the start. You have to create a following, and build a reliable and worthy business that people want to be a part of. Here are a few ways you can make money by creating scrapbooks:

(And if you find yourself having trouble with these skills, then it is not very likely that you will have a good business in the scrapbooking field.) - High imagination and creativity: although many designs will be loved by numerous consumers, they will eventually not be so favorable. At that time, you must retire those designs or templates and create new ones that fit the wants of your consumer. The question you have to ask yourself here is, “Will I be able to create new, different, and beautiful designs continuously each time one is needed?”

Your imagination will be heavily used in this field, so you have to be ready to push it to the limit. - Diligence and great patience: Like I said before, scrapbooking is a hard thing to do. Making a scrapbook for your family and friends is 100% different than making one to sell in your business. The motivation factors are not the same at all - when you are creating a book for your brother, there is an emotional appeal that pushes you to do your best on it. Will you spend as much effort on a scrapbook for total strangers when the only motivation is money? - Working well under urgency: since these books you’ll be doing for paying people, what they say goes. You must be ready to meet their requests and deadlines. Make sure you nail down exactly what your customer expects you to do for them and be sure to meet it. - Keep a business head:

Even though this may be a hobby for some and it may feel like one when you are profiting from it, you have to be aware that it is your business and you have to treat it like one. There is no messing around or being lazy; take this job as seriously as you would any other job. If you keep all of these tips in mind as you create your business and are able to meet the standards, you should do fine in this field. Just remember to take it seriously and always listen to your client.

My New Website

Introduction

When I decided I needed a website for my business I had no idea of the planning involved. Like most people, I thought web design meant deciding on the graphics and the look of the pages and then by some magic it would all happen.I simply hadn’t had any exposure to the planning and build process which I now know to be extensive!

I have a friend who is in the business of SEO web design and web content management systems so I approached him for a quote. As a complete novice who is computer literate up to a point, I was amazed at the depth of initial questioning required to find out exactly what I wanted to achieve.I realise now it is akin to building a house or other huge project where it is all in the preparation.

I had no idea about the various elements and the structure of the site and I found it mind blowing when I learnt about the amount of work involved. So I thought other people would be interested to know more about this complicated process particularly if you consider yourself a non computer person and have to get a website built. I have asked my SEO friend to supply the technical information for this article.

Stages in the Process

Target Audience

Before building a website there are important questions to consider. I was asked who would be my potential audience. Who are my customers likely to be? Would they be children, businesses, home owners, sales people, parents or teenagers and so on?

The Objective of the Website

Then I was asked, what was the objective of my website? Did I want to sell products on line or use it to market my business and get more leads for potential customers? Maybe I would want to use the site as an online brochure to showcase my services. Another possibility was to use the website to foster a community so that I was in contact with other like-minded people, with chat rooms, online discussions and being supported by advertising on the site. This didn’t really apply to my business, although I did think about offering to advertise allied services!

I hadn’t quite realised the scope of a website but as I was asked these questions it became clear that a lot of careful planning went into the preparation before building a website. I realised it is like any project, the majority of the work is in the preparation, a bit like decorating really!

Creating a Site Map

The importance of creating a site map is to get it clear in your mind of all the pages you will have on your website so you can prepare the content for each page and begin to design the flow through the website, such as when a user adds a product to their basket, then enters their delivery and billing address and makes the credit card payment in the correct order.

You wouldn’t build a house without having the technical drawings done and in web development the sitemap is as important. Without it the project will not be optimal, such things as your copy writing and SEO will all end up being half cocked, unless you plan them methodically first.

The aim is to make the site as user friendly as possible so that there are no barriers to getting into the website or making a purchase. For that reason often user name and passwords are set for the customer so that they are not put off making a purchase by having to register. How many times have you gone to buy something online and then been faced with having to choose a user name and password to create an account, and fill out all of your address details and decided not to bother in the end? Well they just lost a sale!

For a non e-commerce site things are simpler with a contact form which allows you to receive enquiries by email without publishing your email address on the website, thus avoiding spam.Web forms can also validate the information before you receive it, so ensuring that the phone number provided does not contain words, and that the email address is in the correct format, for example. These things may sound very technical to us lay-folk but I assure you everything has to be decided on before starting on the construction of the site.

Your Domain Name

Choosing a domain name is often quite a problem because every name you initially come up with will almost certainly have been taken. Domain names ending in .com are by far the most popular and internationally recognised; the snag is that it’s very popularity means that the majority of the shorter names have probably already been registered. However, you can usually think of some domain name that is available, which is much less time consuming than trying to purchase a previously registered domain name from its existing owner, most of the time just contacting them, and getting a reply is a challenge.

So looking at names with endings such as .net; .org .co.uk or .info may be able to provide you with the domain name you want. When choosing your domain name it is very important to include one or more of your keywords if possible as this can apparently help with search engine rankings. So although the name of your business is the obvious choice for a domain name, it is not necessarily the only option. You will no doubt have heard the Hoover/vacuum cleaner story, where Hoover is actually a brand name of a certain type of vacuum cleaner, but these days most people still say they are doing the ‘hoovering’ ! This is an important concept to bear in mind when choosing your domain name as hoovers4u.com might be a much better domain name than discountvaccuumcleaners.com, also vacuum is a tricky word to spell so think about things like that too. Also how easy is it to give out your domain name over the telephone for example? Classic examples of this are paydotcom.com and Slashdot.org confusing or what?

Copy

The next stage is preparing the copy. This is not the design of your website - just the words and visuals you want to have one each of the pages. A good idea before writing the copy is to have created your site map and decided on your SEO keywords, see below sections.

Having gathered all the above information you will need to decide what imagery you want to use within the website content. As we all know, a picture speaks a thousand words and remains in people’s memory far longer than just words.

For each image you could also have a caption, as the caption of an image is the next ‘most read’ words on the page after the page title. Images and their captions need to be clickable. When you click on a picture it should take you to the next stage of the process such as the sale page or placing an enquiry if your website is for lead generation. All images should also have alternative text or alt tags. Alt tags will display the hover text when you position your mouse over the picture, but also they are used by screen readers to assist visually impaired users know what the image is about.

Website Design

Finally we come to the design of your website.

My web design friend explains that the design is a difficult aspect of website development because each person can have a different feeling about the design, much like art.

There are a number of ways to approach website design but ultimately you need to create a design brief for the designer(s) to work from. Look at other websites and your competitor’s websites to find out what you like or dislike. The design brief should give reference to the logo, any existing brand guidelines or schemes and fonts and colour schemes, and should also detail which pages of the website that the designer is being tasked with creating visuals for.

The very best results will be achieved by using a graphic designer, and beware - not all graphic designers are the same. A graphic designer who designs specifically for print is working in a different discipline than a graphic designer who designs for screen and specifically the web. So choose your designer carefully, look at other work that person has done and determine whether or not you like their style. It is also worth remembering that design is a personal thing, just because you have used a company before and liked their work, do you know the same person will be doing the work if you use that company again?

If you are working in the big time and budget allows, use multiple graphic designers who have all been given the same design brief and request three concept designs from each designer. If the client themselves also do a graphic design, even if it’s a back of the envelope scribble, you will then have 10 concept designs. The next step is to get them all together and select the preferred elements from each design. Then give the work to the preferred graphic designer to work up as the final artwork. Once you have reviewed the final visuals the artwork files will then be provided to the developer, usually in layered Photoshop files.

The artwork should be finalised and agreed on by everybody before development of the site begins.

Navigation

Another important aspect when building a website is how you want your navigation to work. You can have links within the content of your website, in the text, so there are not just links from the menu. You will need to decide whether the links will open into a new window, retaining your original page open or just change the page to the one clicked on. Next time you go online, you will realise how much thought has gone into the way in which a website works. You will may also have some ideas for improving how some of them work after reading all of this!

Production

Finally the preparation has been done and the site is ready to be constructed. Now for the more technical stuff! You will need to have decided which programming language to use to build the website. There are two main types for developing a website, one is Unix based, and the other is Windows based. Each one has pros and cons. If you are starting from scratch then it probably won’t matter, so you can go with the preference of your professional doing the work. My website is built on the Unix platform (apparently!) which is the same as many of the more well known websites such as Ebay, Facebook, Google and Amazon. Also your website hosting must be compatible with the development language with which your website is built in.

Work In Progress

The best way to build a website and be able to monitor work in progress is on the web server where the site is ultimately going to live. This way, those involved in reviewing the work can see work in progress and provide comments throughout the development.

Launching Your New Website

The moment of excitement comes when your site finally gets launched and you see the results of all the thought that has gone into the whole process.

I was obviously delighted to eventually see our demolition site get published.

As soon as the site has gone live there is no substitute for real world testing though, so ask as many of your friends and colleagues to view the website from their own offices and give you their thoughts.

Accessibility and Compliance

The website has to meet the current standards for website coding and doing so insures that disabled users, such as the visually impaired, can still access the entire website if they are using a screen reader. It is also a good idea to also discuss conformance moving forward, particularly if you have a web content management system, because and accessible of compliant site may become un-accessible after six months of being edited by you if you do not add or edit the website content in an accessible manner.

Unforeseen Items

There are always things that arise in any project which you suddenly realise you have forgotten, so no matter how well the web designer prepares and asks the right questions, there is bound to be a last minute change of mind or addition to the site. The main aim is to minimise the number of glitches that might arise because they aren’t calculated in at the start and they could cause extra costs and delays on the date of the web site going live.As a general rule it is always a good idea to get he site live to the original plans and then look at an update after it has gone live, unless it is a very small deviation from the initial plans.

Reporting and Monitoring

Once your website is up and running, you might like to know how many people visit your website and from that number how many actually buy the products or place an enquiry. From these statistics you can work out the ratio of hits to sales and gradually make changes to improve the ratios. There are some reliable statistics packages such as Google Analytics or Web-Stat.com which allow you to collect and review website visitor data in near real time. All you need to do this is to have a small block of code inserted into each web page on your site.Using web stats programs is also invaluable for SEO keyword reviews after your site has been live for a while because it tells you what phrases have been typed into the search engines by users before they visited your website.

Another useful service that Web-stat.com provides is to monitor the website and warn you by email or text message if the site is offline.

Marketing

Once the website is live there are lots of things you can do to market your product or service. The first step is to submit it to the search engines and at the same time write articles, and press releases. Getting links to the site from forums, blogs and other social networking spaces are other options. For more on this subject ask your developer about SEO, remember that’s search engine optimisation.

How to be Found on the Web

One of the first questions I was asked was, ‘Do you want it to be found by Google the main search engine?’ If I did then there was a whole process of establishing Keywords. So finding the best keywords are vital if you want to be found in Google. He says there are two main types of keywords. The first is the trophy, or generic, keyword for the industry which in my industry is simply ‘demolition’. The second kind of keyword is the long tail keyword. These are not searched for as frequently but if you can get a match then they are much more likely to convert into customers. A good example of this in my industry is ‘factory demolition company Derby’. So it is very important to do a lot of research on keywords to find both those that are the most popular and the most specific. Generally most users only look at the first page of results so you will want to get your website promoted so as to get on this page for your chosen keywords.

Conclusion

Wheww. What an amazing amount of work! I hadn’t realised when I started the process of getting a website up and running, how complicated it all is and how many factors you have to consider before even designing the website. The word web design is really a misnomer, as people often think it’s just about the graphic design on the home page, and the branding of the product. Unless you are a computer whizz, most people have no idea how much goes into designing and building a website and the systems that support the work you want it to do. I hope that this article gives you an understanding and insight into the whole process of website development from start to finish.Next time you type in a web address or click on a link to a website, remember all the above work that has probably gone into it!

Beginnning a football programme collection

To effectively begin a football programme collection, an individual needs to choose a theme to his or her collection. There are thousands of programmes available in Britain, and even more worldwide. To give a collection a of purpose a theme should be adopted to avoid unwanted accumulation and to keep to a preferred budget.

Sometimes you come across a programme that covers or crosses two themes at once. These are likely to prove to be valuable purchases in years to come as they signify a special or historical event, which will muster memories for soccer fans from around the globe in the future.

A football programme is a great way to record a memorable event at a particular game. This could be in the form of some sort of achievement such as a player milestone, which can be featured in the programme. Player milestones come in many formats, such as an appearance record, a goal scoring record, the final match of a players career, a number of years of service by the manager, and much more.

The darker side of soccer is also often recorded in the programme. These historical events interest collectors who see them as poignant reminders of the past. They are sought after and valuable as a result. The disasters at Hillsborough, Ibrox and Bradford have valuable programmes associated with them, not only for the match itself, but also the subsequent commemorative matches.

A very collectible set of football programmes to own are those related to the Munich Air Disaster involving the Manchester United team and Busby’s Babes. The programme from the game against Partizan Belgrade who Manchester United were playing on the tragic trip can sell for over a thousand pounds. A similar sum can be achieved for the programme against Sheffield Wednesday directly after the disaster, where the team list wasn’t filled in for the Man United team.

Notable occurrences are usually reflected in the content and style of the programme. Important football programmes to get hold of are final matches in an old stadium, or the first issue within a new one. Most programmes of this type are abundant with interesting features and historical information, making them a gem in any soccer programme collection.

Programmes can mean different things to different collectors. You may value a prticular programme highly due to entirely personal reasons and memories which they may conjure up. For other collectors the pursuit is one of passion, understanding more about the history and traditions of a football team that they support. Whatever your reason, collecting football programmes is a very rewarding hobby, and comes highly recommended to any soccer fan.

Even while many other business are in decline due to the current state of the economy, companies providing breakdown cover continue to thrive and it’s hardly surprising really, given that nobody enjoys experiencing a breakdown, particularly if you don’t have cover to fall back on.

A Balloon Arch

Introduction

Whenever there is a special event being held, the organisers want to make an impact or find something novel to wow the people attending the event. Sometimes there are ice sculptures or huge displays of flowers, maybe swathes of fabric, all intended to make an impression on the guests. One novel idea is to have Balloon sculptures or a Balloon Arch. They are bright, colourful and impressive structures which catch the eye and are a fantastic way to make an impact at your event. There are balloon arches to compliment any occasion, whether it is a wedding, promotional marketing campaign event or special celebration such as 40th wedding anniversary.

Usually when there is a special event, profession balloon decorators would be engaged to make an eye catching arch of colour or combination of colours which can be twisted to greater effect. There is a choice of a huge selection of any number of colours, from basic colours to pearl shine and metallic finishes, when combined in a creative blend, they will augment any decor you may choose.

Professional balloon party decorators would know how to make a balloon arch and use electronic equipment to measure the precise amount of helium to fill the balloon to achieve a uniform size for the best results.

However, if you are an aspiring balloon sculptor then you might like to attempt a balloon arch for yourself.

Here is How You Make a Balloon Arch

Materials:

Latex Balloons (The number will depend on the size of the arch), Nylon Line (Like that used for fishing), 2 Weights, Balloon Sizer, Curling Ribbon or tulle (Net), Helium in canister

Stage 1

Cut the nylon thread (fishing line) to the exact, length required (See formula below)

Arch length formula

  • If the arch is wider than it is tall: Height + Width = approximate total length
  • If the arch height and width are about the same: (1.5 x Height) + Width = approximate total length

If the arch is taller than it is wide: (2 x Height) + Width = approximate total length

Stage 2

Both ends need to be tied to something heavy to hold it in place while you work.

Stage 3

Using the balloon sizer as a guide, inflate the balloons with helium so that they are a consistent size. (A cardboard circular template can be used if you have no sizer.)

Stage 4

Secure the balloons on to the line (always approaching the line from the same side)

Stage 5

Leave approximately 12″ between each balloon. Once they are tied on the balloons can be moved smoothly to the required position so that it is firm and the shape you want.

Stage 6

Release the ends of the line from its holder and fix a suitable weight to either end of the arch to hold it in place. It can be a star weight or frilly foil weight.

Stage 7

Any finishing touches can now be added to the arch such as curling ribbon which is allowed to hang down or tulle festooned to give a wedding effect.

Helium Balloons

Balloons filled with helium gas are lighter than air which means they float upwards. Professional quality balloons are made from 100% biodegradable latex and are usually larger in size than most retail packet balloons. Helium filled latex balloons typically only retain their buoyancy for a few hours. The enclosed helium atoms are smaller than the pores in the latex through which they escape. To increase the float time of a helium balloon for up to a week, the inside of the balloons is coated with a special polymer solution to minimise the leakage of the helium.

Safety and environmental concerns

Helium filled balloons once released into the atmosphere usually travel a long way before they finally burst or deflate. An estimated 90/95% of balloons released rise to an altitude of 5 miles, at which height the cold will cause the balloon to become brittle and shatter into miniscule pieces. The small fragments then floating back to earth to degrade into the ground. Because the latex from which balloons are made comes from the Hevea tree they are completely biodegradable and the dyes used in latex colouring are also non-toxic. Research has demonstrated that latex balloons degrade faster than oak leaves. Oxidation occurs first in the breakdown of latex and it begins within an hour of a balloon being inflated. As the decaying process is by natural exposure the nutrients are released into the soil.

Balloon Sculptures and Arches

Even though hundreds of balloons may be needed for sculptures and arches, they are often limited because of the round shape of the balloons. More ambitious “sculptures” have been attempted on occasion but mostly they are restricted to simple walls or arches.

There are many events where balloon arches could be used. The most popular type of arch is a single row of pearl latex balloons with co-ordinating ribbons. Often they provide a focal point at a wedding for a couple to pass through either at the service or at the reception. They may serve as a frame to outline other displays or for photograph taking, or just to enhance a feature at the venue. The arch is held in place by a hand-made weight covered by a bow. Sometimes balloons arches are used for table decorations at special events with smaller balloons for each arch. The decoration will usually include curled ribbon with an added weight to stop the balloons from floating away.

Conclusion

There is no doubt that balloon arches make a wonderful eye catching centre piece for any event|occasion|festivity}. There is an unlimited choice of colours and effects, helium balloons can make a particularly interesting balloon arch at a relatively low cost. They are a spectacular alternative to arches of flowers or drapes and provide a lively talking point for guests. Whatever your celebration may be, whether it is a wedding, birthday or special anniversary, or a corporate event, the balloon arch will give a special flavour to your occasion enhancing the total experience.

Weight Loss Tips For All

Disclaimer: This post is based on information publicly available in the popular press and medical journals that deal with losing fat. Nothing herein is intended to be or should be interpreted to be any sort of medical advice. For medical advice the reader should consult with his or her doctor or other medical specialist.

With a quick search on the internet, one will find that there are literally thousands of weight loss methods being advertised online. It is no wonder that search terms such as “how to lose weight” are among the most heavily searched in the health/fitness niche. Among the most popular are the products that contain some sort of wonder ingredient from another country, such as the brand new guarana supplement. With the acai craze dying down, guarana seems to be aiming for the top of the very same market. Although actual experiences are hard to come by, the drug seems to be doing pretty well when used in conjunction with regular diet/exercise.

Yet another diet fad that has been around for years is the notion that our colons need to be cleansed if we want to lose weight and be healthier. A top product in this niche is called power colon cleanse and is experiencing growing popularity. It supposedly uses ingredients widely known to clean the colon of toxins and pave the way for a healthier, thinner lifestyle. Again, when these products are so heavily promoted it is hard to say how well they work, but from some basic research online it seems to be doing pretty well compared to other such cleanses.

Lastly, there is a third category of weight loss products that are sweeping the world by storm known as vegetable cleanses. They apparently work similar to other cleanses but they boast the antioxidant power of vegetables. A new product in this niche is called the veggie 9 cleanse which includes many leafy green vegetables that are said to have cleansing properties for the human body.
